Tucker University: Wing Clipper

Tucker University is a monthly class featuring a tool or pattern from Deb Tucker at Studio 180.

Most ruler sets you have to have precision cutting before you sew. Deb's rulers are more forgiving. With her technique you sew your blocks together first and trim to size. This allows your points to match easier and helps keep them from being cut off. Her rulers are designed to make a wide variety of base blocks that can be combined into hundreds of different patterns limited only by your imagination.

This is a technique class, but you can combine the blocks into a quilt, or table runner, or pillow. Again, you're only limited by your imagination.

The Wing Clipper is a must have tool if you are making Flying Geese units for your quilt. This tool, and the associated Fast Flying Geese construction technique, allow you to make four finished units from five squares. The best part is that each unit is constructed slightly oversized so each can be trimmed to a perfect size with perfect seam placement once the sewing and pressing are complete by using the Wing Clipper tool.

On to what to bring! You will need:

  • The Wing Clipper Ruler (available for purchase if you don't have it already)
  • Magic Wand is useful (not the Harry Potter kind, fortunately this technique isn't that hard)
  • Rotary Cutter with a good blade
  • Small cutting mat (we have some to share if you don't have a small portable one)
  • Tucker Trimmer (maybe)
  • 6x12 ruler (this is super handy, but the exact dimensions aren't critical)
  • Fabric (Look farther down for what to precut)
You will need fabrics with good contrast. Try for two to three colors and a good background.
Cut for the Flying Geese Unit (Main color and background):
  • One 5.5" square (will yield four flying geese)
  • Four (4) 3" squares (will yield four flying geese)
Cut for Picket Fence Units:
Pickets Method:
  • Four (4) 2 3/4" x 4 3/4" rectangles
  • Four (4) 2 3/4" squares

Quickets Method:

  • Four (4) 5.5" squares
  • Four (4) 3" squares
Cut for the Mirror Image units:
  • Two (2) 5.5" squares (background)
  • Four (4) 3" squares (color 1)
  • Four (4) 3" squares (color 2)
