Elemental Coat Class with Teresa Coates
Have you wanted to make a quilt coat but weren’t sure where to start? Here’s your chance! Join designer Teresa Coates to make your own coat with her Elemental Coat pattern. You’ll learn about pattern layout, including how to use large-scale quilts, assymetrical quilts, vintage quilts and other textiles, including quilted fabric, tablecloths and more. She’ll teach you how to construct a coat that fits you and your style — adjust the length, add a collar or hood, finish your seams, or add a lining.
You’ll learn how to choose the best quilt, place pattern pieces for maximum visual impact, construct your coat, apply binding, and add finishing details. Leave with the skills and confidence to create a one-of-a-kind wearable heirloom you’ll enjoy for years to come.
Supply List:
- The Elemental Coat Pattern by Teresa Coates
- 3½ yards Pattern Ease (for tracing your size)
- A repurposed quilt, new quilt, or pre-quilted yardage (see pattern for fabric requirements)
- Bias binding (purchase ready-made or make your own)
- Sewing machine in good working order
- Basic sewing supplies:
- Coordinating thread
- Wound bobbins
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Quilting ruler
- Fabric scissors
- Seam ripper
- Wonder Clips or pins
- Fabric marking tool
- Iron and pressing supplies (optional but helpful)
Before Class: Please trace your pattern pieces onto Stitch-n-Sew tracing paper (available at Heavenly Stitches) following the instructions in the pattern. If you’re unsure of your size, trace two sizes and include any optional pieces (hood, collar, or pockets) you plan to make.

| Instructor Bio: | About Teresa: I’m a quilt maker, pattern designer, and sewing teacher that loves both traditional quilting and garment-sewing. I got my start in the professional quilting world back in 2010 when I got a job with The Fabric Shop Network. I’d never heard of local quilt shops before and little did I know, my entire life would change with that discovery. I went on to work for Robert Kaufman Fabrics and Fabric Depot before making the move to Shannon Fabrics. I spent the next eight years developing the educational arm, connecting with makers across the country as the hot of our weekly “Sew Together Tuesday” live videos. Along with my partner, I traveled in an RV across the states, broadcasting live from more than 30 quilt shops and visiting many more. These days, I’m pouring my heart into my indie pattern company and a new live YouTube show: Make with Teresa. I am passionate about sharing what I’ve learned over more than 40 years of sewing and quilting, whether that’s with sewing patterns, online workshops or live events. I love it all! |
